Answers to Life's Questions #3

Does sitting too close to the television set ruin your eyesight?

It may cause some eye fatigue, but no more than sitting in front of a computer screen all day or reading for hours does, says George W. Blankenship, an ophthalmologist in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, and a past president of the American Academy of Ophthalmologists (say that 5 times quickly!). Looking at a nearby object forces the eye muscles to contract, and like any other muscles, eye muscles can tire out or get sore.

There is a link between a lot of up-close focusing and worsening eyesight if you're already nearsighted, but it's rare. You'd have to spend years watching a lot of television - 16 back-to-back episodes of Full House a day, say - for that to be a factor, says Blankenship.
